Our Mission
The Smithfield Friends of the Library is a dedicated nonprofit supporting the Blackwater Regional Library — Smithfield Branch. We foster close relationships between the citizens of Smithfield and their local library, ensuring it remains a vibrant center for learning, culture, and community.
Developing Programs
We create and fund engaging programs that promote literacy, knowledge, and a love of reading for all ages in the Smithfield community.
Promoting Participation
We encourage community members to use and engage with library services, ensuring the library remains a thriving hub for everyone.
Receiving Gifts & Donations
We gratefully accept donations and gifts that directly support the library's mission and help fund special projects and resources.
Providing Special Funds
We provide funding for special library needs that go beyond the regular budget — from new technology to expanded collections.
Our Programs
From literacy initiatives to community events, our programs bring the library to life for everyone in Smithfield.
Literacy & Reading Programs
We support all the programs of the Library with funding as well as volunteers. We work to support the vision of the Branch Librarian and the staff to help build a welcoming space for all library users.
Author Talks & Events
We host local and visiting authors, speakers, and educators for community events that inspire curiosity and celebrate the written word.
Book Nook & Annual Book Sale
The Book Nook is always open whenever the library is open. Our Annual Book Sale takes place each spring, and all proceeds fund programming and help meet the library's needs throughout the year.
Summer Reading Challenge
Each summer we run a reading challenge for kids, teens, and adults, with prizes and recognition to keep readers of all ages engaged through the break.
Technology & Digital Access
We support digital equity in Smithfield by helping the library fund the technology and digital resources it needs to meet this goal, so everyone can get online and learn.
